Personality: Helga was ever the physical embodiment of honesty, fair play, loyalty, hard work, and most of all for her compassionate and charming nature. She was a jolly, warm hearted woman of tolerance, accepting not just of muggle born witches and wizards but of the magical creatures often thought lesser of by magical humans. Helga was an early and consistently strong champion for equality for all peoples. As someone who healed and looked after all creatures, she understood that a magical human life was no more or less valuable than the life of an elf or Muggle. She treated everyone the same and as she would have liked to be treated in return.
Helga sticks firmly and stubbornly to her beliefs, standing up for magical and non magical alike, human and beast. She is stubborn in this way when faced against someone who tries to tell her otherwise, defending those whose voices are brushed aside or purposely ignored.
She had a love and strong talent for charms, particularly food related ones coming from her joy of seeing people gather together to enjoy the company of one another. What better way to do that then as you enjoyed a meal together. Determined to bring that feeling up several times a day, she and the house elves make it a priority to ensure each meal of every school day is delicious and amazing, going as far as selecting several holidays to really blow the minds of staff and students alike with her talent and abilities with a grand feast. It warms her heart to see the enjoyment and good tides of those enjoying her food.
History: Helga was the middle child of her family, hailing from a coastal town in Wales on the western side of English Isle. At an early age she showed large magical potential, her base level of power exceeding that of her elder siblings. Growing up she learned magic from her parents, developing her own spin on spells and found she had natural talent when it came to plant or creature linked spells. Magic wasn't all she learned from her parents, they also helped introduce Helga to the joy of cooking. She had an affinity to it, liking not just the creative outlet for putting ingredients together to create a dish but the emotional positivity that came from serving it to her family and the connection they had enjoying it together. Deciding to blend her two favorite and strongest skills together, she began to experiment with blending her cooking with charm spells, coming across several successes amongst a few failures.
In their rather large town, Helga's family was one of a slightly higher status then many. Both from her family's bloodlines as well as the magic they provided the town. For a majority of her youth magic was openly practiced around Wales by witches and wizards. Often their talents were called on to help muggles with an assortment of issues from magical pest control or cures for an illness to helping solve a social debate amongst the community. As the town's resident magical family, both magical and non magical people often came by in search of aid or help and for the most part many requests were never turned down. In addition to being well respected by the town, they were also well respected by the wizarding community, often getting invited to various parties and balls of distant friends and relatives. Helga would be brought along but for the most part she found herself entertained with practicing her magic or talking with the hosts staff rather than dancing or mingling with other children her own age including her own siblings.
It was at one such event that Helga would meet the girl that would become not just her best friend but most loyal companion and ally. Bored out of her mind at yet another dance to celebrate the wedding of a distant relative she knew little of, Helga turned to magic to cure her boredom and decided to experiment with a charm spell she had developed. With unquestionable success a few days earlier with pheasants and turkeys, it seemed like it should work for a larger beast that was the suckling pig with perhaps a bit more power added to it. During her attempts she was approached by a girl around her age named Rowena who it seemed had grown intrigued and interested by what Helga was doing instead of what everyone else seemed to be doing. It wasn't long afterward that the two dove into a conversation, blocking out the party around them as they talked about an assortment of topics and found themselves creating a friendship that grew and strengthened long after the current party and several to follow had long ended. When they couldn't meet in person, the two exchanged letters to keep each other updated on the events and discoveries they had come across.
A few years later following the meeting of her best friend, Helga would find herself meeting another long time friend for the first time in a similar fashion. It was during her elder sister Rhian's wedding, an event she herself offered to provide the food and some entertainment to celebrate the occasion. She had no intention of mingling with the guests, too absorbed in her charm work on the assortment of dishes the room was feasting on. That however didn't stay that way when her sister pulled her away to meet two of her future brother in-laws. Gifford, her sister's husband though a little older seemed alright and as long as he treated her right and didn't hurt Rhian he was ok in Helga's book. It was the younger brother Godric that surprised her as he seemed interested in meeting her but not for the usual reason. It had been her charm work and wedding meal that had drawn his attention, amazed at what magic she had produced. It wasn't long before they were off to one side of the room in deep discussion about magic and food. Onlookers wondered what had made the odd pair so distracted they missed the rest of the event. It wasn't worth trying to explain to any of them anyway though for a short while they're was some teasing from her sister about setting up a marriage offer between Helga and Godric given the amount of time they had spent together. She brushed this off of course, he like Rowena had become a friend of the young witch and she would keep in touch with him via letters as much as possible, even going as far as sending instructions on a few easy food charms to help along his travels. She always enjoyed reading the responses to those, getting to find out how impressed his fellow knights were at the change of meal with a hint of flair to it.
Following in her parents footsteps Helga became a talented witch with specialized skills in both herbology and charms. Her healing ability was rather strong too but she took a step back to it as her older brother Gerallt was slightly stronger in that field then she was. It didn't bother Helga so much, her brother and his wife could take over the family clinic if he wanted because Helga liked the freedom this gave her to improve and develop her cooking charms and dish recipes. Alongside this, she often journeyed out to offer her assistance to those in need be they human or creature. She built bonds with an assortment of magical creatures, often giving them a voice when confrontations rose up between them and humans. Helga became an advocate for equal rights for everyone, magical and non magical, human and non human. A life was a life no matter what shape it was in and deserved the chance to show what form of soul it carried before being judged.
At some point along her rise Helga in her late teens met her late husband at a family party one winter. He too was a wizard and just like her best friend did years ago at a party he had stumbled upon Helga in the middle of charming a dish or two on the banquet table instead of socializing around the party. The pair hit it off and spent the evening in deep conversation and agreed to see one another again. After a few meetings he asked her father for her hand and the two were married in the spring. They spent what time they could together but often their different occupations separated them for a decent length of time. He was a soldier in the armed forces that had gathered along the eastern border, working to defend the country from invaders coming to take over Wales. She didn't like him going into battle, no matter how strong or experienced he was it still worried her to see him leave. He returned to her each time, giving her the relief of seeing him back but never fully lifting that worry that soon he would be gone again.
It was one day several years later when she received the letter she had dreaded receiving ever in her life, her husband had been part of a team that had come under heavy attack and communication had been lost, the team was presumed dead but so far no bodies had been discovered. Helga waited a few years, holding on to hope that he would return to her and tried to distract herself with work and cooking. Neither seemed to fully remove the thought from her mind and eventually she gave in, deciding he must be dead after all or he would have returned to her by now. He had left her just as they had begun their family, her only reminder of him now was their two young children and the home they had built together.
The timing seemed almost too perfect, no sooner had Helga metaphorically lay to rest her husband that she received a visit from her best and long time friend Rowena. During such a time her friend informed her she was in the midst of a rather large project and wanted her help with. Her desire or rather dream maybe was to have a place for young witches and wizards, magically gifted children to come to learn and train their magical talents. Rowena desired not just Helga's help but also their two other friends she had met with a few times when visiting her long time friend. It was a project that seemed to ignite a bit of warmth and light back into her that she thought was gone. She focused right away on her part of the school, given her experience and joy on the matter Helga offered to take charge of the kitchen and the school staff as well as the meals that would be prepared each day for the school. She knew just the ones to help her craft away in the kitchen and set out to gather house elves both from her family and those recently unemployed.
Helga would often meet with Rowena, Godric, and Salazar throughout the construction of the school, the four of them wanting to fine tune a few things before its completion. One such thing seemed to be determining how to teach all those that would be coming to the school for an education. The three seated at the table with her had different ideas on which students they would prefer to teach, wanting some based on certain traits, qualities, bloodlines. Helga would not approve of opening a school limiting the student body to only those born to pureblooded magic families, tossing that requirement immediately from the table. She believed that anyone born with magical abilities should be a student. Because they each had a different view and desire for students it was decided that they would teach them all but sort the children into various houses headed by each of them. Again it seemed the others were determined to accept the traits in students that they themselves favored. She was of a different mind and so long as honest, loyal, and not afraid of some hard work she would welcome them all and treat them as she would want to be treated. They spent some time trying to decide on how best to sort the coming students, eventually deciding to use Godric's hat and once transfiguring it to a sentient being they each took a turn to imbue the qualities and traits the sought in students into it so once it was placed on a student's head they would be sorted into the house best fitted to them. With that out of the way, the plans resumed for the school and Helga had a hand at designing the common room and dorms for the students of her house. Making a place of comfort and warmth no matter what sort of day you had, it would melt away as soon as you stepped inside.
For just this first year of the school, Helga decided to send her children to stay with her younger sister Gweneth who lived with her own growing family not far from the location of the school in Scotland. She would be able to stop by and visit them as often as she could, possibly once she had a better feel for the school and had settled into her new role as a teacher she could bring them the following year. It seemed reasonable at first but she wondered just how long apart she could be from them before her desire to keep her family close at hand would drive her to bring them to the school anyway.
