Gwen found herself smiling, a little enthusiastic about eventually learning something and showing off to her eldest brother that the school was doing her some good as well. If she came back spouting all sorts of things...ugh, he might take her away. He always said that women should be smart but not too smart or they start getting ideas or worse. No, best not to give him any reason to take her out when Godric and the others were depending on them to teach their students something that would be so beneficial in the long run.
When Merrick brought up her daughter, then her face really lit up. "Oh yes, my sweet little Loraine, though we all call her Lora. She's just a small little thing, even for her age. So delicate and yet I love her so. Even when she screams endlessly into the night, it's hard to see her as anything but my sweet darling. She's here with me, actually. The castle, I mean. Down in my rooms right now. I had just finally gotten her to sleep when I came up here for some air - one of Helga's sweet house elfs agreed to stay with her so that I could take a quick walk to ease my mind before tomorrow." She explained, knowing that he likely did not care but she couldn't help but gush. Lora had been her great joy through all of her sorrows. If not for the child that had been growing inside of her, who knows what might have happened to Gwen after Shelton died.
"And though my brother has fixed my room with the appropriate silencing charms, I do apologize if you hear her in the night. Sometimes it takes hours of walking to settle her down enough to sleep. The movement just makes her calm, for some reason." Of course, the walls between the staff rooms were rather thick, which would also help dull the sounds coming from the rooms themselves. Gwen just wanted her brother's charms to work so that her neighbors didn't hate her for keeping them up half the night.
